Big do in Rhinebeck...Letter to Abbas...Bugging cell phones
Posted: 7/31/2010

RHINEBECK, N.Y. (AP) — It's a private affair, but security precautions around and over the village of Rhinebeck in New York's Hudson Valley make it clear there's a big event on tonight. Chelsea Clinton is expected to marry investment banker Marc Mezvinsky (mez-VIN'-skee) at an exclusive estate in front of 400-500 guests. Federal authorities have declared the area a no-fly zone.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says he's going to call the Republicans' bluff on deficit reduction. In an interview with CBS, Obama is promising to put forward "a bunch of ideas" for bringing down the federal deficit, though he's not mentioning specifics. Many analysts say both spending cuts and tax increases are needed to tame the soaring deficit.

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) — A senior PLO official says President Barack Obama has sent Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas a letter warning him that U.S.-Palestinian relations might suffer if he refuses to resume direct peace talks with Israel. The White House has been pushing Abbas hard in recent days to move quickly to face-to-face negotiations, but it has no comment on the reported letter.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A computer security researcher says he's built a device that can intercept and record cell phone calls, and it only cost him $1,500 to make. Chris Paget had planned to show off the device at a Las Vegas conference today, but federal authorities have warned him it might violate wiretapping laws. His research demonstrates how cheap it's become to make such devices with equipment found on the Internet.

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Two Mississippi men are facing charges after allegedly wrapping blocks of wood in duct tape and bubble wrap, attaching Toshiba labels to them and trying to pass them off as laptops. No one actually bought the fakes, but authorities in Hinds County have charged the men with trademark infringement and selling goods with counterfeit labels.
